The handball players of Aalsmeer dealt a sensitive blow to Achilles Bocholt in their own Sporthal De Bloemhof tonight. The leader of the BENE-League went back to Belgium with a 27-24 defeat.
Aalsmeer started the game strongly against the four-time winner of the BENE-League. Halfway through the first half, Bert Bouwer’s team took a four-point lead and did not relinquish it. Aalsmeer also defended very strongly and hardly gave Bocholt an attacking chance. At halftime, the North Holland team, partly thanks to three striking penalty throws from Donny Vink, had a 15-8 lead.

After the break, Aalsmeer continued to play at a high pace, although there were also some sloppiness here and there. The defense, however, remained solid as a house. The lead remained around five points. In the final phase of the race, Bocholt started a strong final sprint that made it very difficult for Aalsmeer. The Belgian formation even came back to one point: 25-24. Fortunately, goals in the final minute from Don Hartog and Jeromy van der Ban secured the victory.
The victory brings Aalsmeer to 30 points from 19 games. With three games to go, qualification for the play-offs is almost a fact. The lead on number four Sporting Pelt is six points.
