Uitkerkse Polder cycle route proposed: “this is where you really experience what peace is”
The launch of the Uitkerkse Polder cycle route is part of a complete reworking of the recreational bicycle offer in West Flanders. A completely new route has been developed for this route. Westtoer responds even better to the experience of recreational users thanks to the integration of new paths, nature reserves and nice stopping points along the cycling routes. A total of 25 new cycle routes will be launched. Seven of these were already opened last year and the Uitkerkse Polder cycle route is the fifth of 18 new cycle routes that will be proposed in the spring of 2023.
“Cycling through the Uitkerkse Polder you really experience what peace is. This vast meadow landscape is centuries old and a paradise for birds. You leave the coastline via the still young Zeebos to look for the hinterland. You cycle through Lissewege, one of the most beautiful villages in Flanders, whose flat church tower will be permanently opened from the summer as a viewpoint within the Horizon 2025 project. You have a beautiful view of the white village, the harbor and the polders. Via Domein Polderwind you pedal to Bruges to cycle back towards the sea at Sint-Pietersplas. Along the way, the Meetkerkse Moeren still await, a unique piece of nature where the silence is a constant”, says Sabien Lahaye-Battheu chairman Westtoer and deputy for Tourism. The route is signposted with hexagonal signs and has starting points at the Uitkerkse Polder Visitor Center in Blankenberge, at Parking Meetkerke Dorp in Zuienkerke and at the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw Visiting Church in Lissewege. There is a starting sign at each of these three starting points.
All revised routes will be integrated as ‘signposted suggestion route’ on the cycle network maps.
