The best moment at Jong AZ – VVV Venlo came from the foot of Mexx Meerdink. The striker of the Alkmaar talent scored behind his standing leg just after the break. “I feel like the old Mexx again.” Meerdink eventually scored twice and partly because of that Young AZ won 4-3 against the Limburgers at home.
“I can be proud of the way I finish that ball,” says Mexx Meerdink shortly after Young AZ’s great victory. “That this can come out like this after a long injury period is nice.”
Compliment
With two hits, Meerdink stood out for the young Alkmaar formation. Nevertheless, trainer Maarten Martens wanted to give the team a compliment afterwards. “These new young players showed that we can count on them.” Jong AZ played against VVV with the necessary debutants and players with little experience in professional football.

Bell
With his two goals, Meerdink now has five goals this season. The ambitious nineteen-year-old attacker wants to find the net at least ten times. “If I stay fit, you will see a good Mexx with many goals, I hope.” Perhaps there will be even more playing minutes for the goalkeeper this weekend. Because of Yusuf Barasi’s injury, Meerdink is hoping for a call from Pascal Jansen. Meerdink has been part of the main squad’s match selection a few times, but has not yet made his debut.

Due to the win over VVV, Jong AZ does not climb in the ranking. The U23 team simply remains seventh behind number six MVV. A tough job awaits next week for Martens’ team, visiting leader PEC Zwolle.
