Companies in US and Canada call on truckers to lift blockade

US and Canadian business groups on Tuesday called on truck drivers protesting against corona restrictions to end their blockade of a major trade route between the two countries.

The Ambassador Bridge, which connects the Canadian province of Ontario with the US state of Michigan, has been partially blocked from car traffic by protesting truckers since Monday. “Business organizations on both sides of the border are calling for a rapid and immediate lifting of the blockade of the Windsor-Detroit Ambassador Bridge and a timely reopening of the bridge,” the business clubs said in a statement.

The bridge is the busiest trade route in North America with 40,000 daily commuters, tourists and truck drivers carrying $323 million worth of goods. Montana, another busy trade link, has also been shut down for days by protesters.

Earlier, Canadian Transport Minister Omar Alghabra warned that the border blockade, if it continues, “will have serious consequences for our economy, for our supply chain”. According to him, especially car manufacturers and food distributors are affected.
