More than a thousand heart patients a year receive an internal defibrillator (ICD) while it is questionable whether they need it. The device does not always help to prevent death, while major complications can occur after implanting an ICD. This is stated by the Dutch Healthcare Institute after research. Hospitals are not open enough about this in their information.
