In the mid-noughties, We Are Scientists were part of the “Class of 2005” – an informal community of guitar bands that played new wave and post-punk with a new zest. The trio’s hit back then was called “Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt”. If you play it back today, you realize that the modernity of that time is still noticeable even when you come of age.

What is great for this old song by the band becomes a problem for the new album LOBES: The eighth record by We Are Scientists could also have been the second or fourth (no, not the first, because it sounded different in 2002, namely pop-punk- made fun of). Okay, to be fair, a track like “Dispense With Sentiment” cleverly plays with mainstream elements that wouldn’t have occurred to the band in 2005.

Attempts to combine arcade-fire fury and Killers megalomania fail on a few tracks, leaving music that sounds like it got stuck at a suburban train station halfway to the arena. The Franz Ferdinand memory sound of “Less From You” is much better. And more timeless.
