Sommeliers compete in Heule for a place in the national final

Today, the jury paid particular attention to their professional knowledge, but also to their appearance and customer-friendliness.

More than 10,000 people, professionals, but also laymen in the trade, have chosen about 20 laureates to participate in the Sommelier of the Year election. It is an election, not a competition, the jury emphasizes.

There are two to three candidates per province, including three West Flemish people: Carin Hoedt from Merlijn in Beselare, Esteban Casteur from Rebel in Marke, and Kenzo Lauwereins from Vlass in Middelkerke. They had to come before a professional jury today. And this year not only their knowledge of wine was tested. The well-known beer sommelier Sofie Vanrafelghem also tested their knowledge of beer.
