Lee scores in the 1st minute

Jae-sung Lee opened the scoring in the first minute. A cross from the left by Anthony Caci into the six-yard box turned the South Korean into an early lead. Immediately before that, Bochum keeper Manuel Riemann had been able to parry an Onisiwo cross from the other side just before Lee.

Onisiwo submits first, then he scores himself

Silvan Widmer increased after preliminary work by Karim Onisiwo (18th). He had beaten Ivan Ordets on the left, but lost control of the ball near the goal, but captain Widmer took over the ball and converted. The Austrian, who benefited from a Soares bad pass in this situation, then scored the 3-0 himself (28th).

The half-time was okay at this altitude. The hosts acted in a focused, consistent and cold-hearted manner, while VfL made life difficult for themselves with some blatant mistakes on the defensive.

VfL makes four changes, but 05 scores for the fourth time

Bochum’s coach Thomas Letsch responded at half-time with four new players and switched from a back four to a back three. But not much has changed. As before, VfL found it difficult to generate offensive danger.

Mainz set the tone, let Bochum come and waited for a counterattack. Such a goal led to the fourth goal: Barreiro won a duel in midfield, ran and put a right to Onisiwo just before the penalty area, who netted confidently from nine meters (57th).

VfL hopes, but Onisiwo puts the lid on

Not much changed until the 70th minute. But then the ball came in the FSV penalty area via Asano and Losilla to Pierre Kunde, who scored from eight yards. And only three minutes later the ball bounced off Erhan Mašović’s calf after a Bochum corner and from there into the Mainz goal – only 4:2.

Now Bochum drew new hope, while the FSV now showed some uncertainties on the defensive. Kevin Schlotterbeck had a chance to head the ball, but he narrowly missed the FSV goal from nine yards out (79′). But Bochum’s rebellion came too late: Shortly before the end Onisiwo put the lid on it with his third goal (88th).
