“New impulse the best solution”
Second division Fortuna Düssledorf separates from coach Christian Preusser and Daniel Thioune takes over the coaching position. The Rhinelanders officially confirmed this on Tuesday, previously the “Express” and the “Kicker” had reported on the approaching dismissal of Preusser.
Preusser, whose contract ran until June 30, 2023, only took over as coach in Düsseldorf last summer. Since then, the 38-year-old has only managed five wins and five draws in 21 competitive games, which corresponds to an average of 0.95 points per game. On Sunday, the Fortune lost 1-0 to Holstein Kiel and slipped to 15th place in the table. The team has only won one game in their last ten games.
Fortuna Düsseldorf is Thioune’s third position as head coach
The successor Thioune was released in May last year after only 32 competitive games at Düsseldorf league rivals Hamburger SV (points average 1.63). Previously, he had coached VfL Osnabrück for almost three years and led Lower Saxony back to the 2nd Bundesliga in 2019. Thioune, like Preußer’s predecessor Uwe Rösler, was last traded at Hannover 96 before Christoph Dabrowski took over the post of head coach from Jan Zimmermann.
“Unfortunately, the progress we’ve made over the last few weeks hasn’t meant that we’ve been able to score points. The situation in the table and the fact that we haven’t scored a point or scored in the last four second division games have forced us to act. After intensive discussions, we came to the conclusion that a new impulse is the best solution to achieve positive results again,” said Düsseldorf’s sports director Klaus Allofs, explaining the decision.
Allofs added: “In Daniel Thioune we have hired a coach who brings a lot of energy and passion to the table. He has shown in his stations that he stands for intensive football and can also master difficult situations. Our thanks go to Christian Preusser, who always worked with the team with full commitment, whole heart and great expertise. We wish him all the best for his future and the luck he lacked at Fortuna.”
Thioune on Fortuna: “Challenging task at a traditional club”
The new coach, Thioune, who is due to be officially introduced at a club press conference at 2 p.m., said: “This challenging task at a traditional club like Fortuna really appeals to me and I will go to work with great energy. The team has enough potential to break out of the table basement. Bringing this potential onto the pitch is now the task. I’m sure that together with my coaching team and the entire staff we will succeed.”
