Telstar won the make-up game against MVV tonight with 5-3. Rein Smit was the celebrated man for the team from Velsen-Zuid. The striker graced his first starting place this season with a hat-trick.
At Telstar, assistant Uli Landvreugd took over the honors because Mike Snoei was suspended. The trainer that last week extended his contract, received his fourth yellow card against FC Dordrecht on Saturday. Rein Smit was preferred to Glynor Plet by the home team. It was Smit’s first start of the season and he formed the attack together with Christos Giousis.
Telstar already had a number of good opportunities in the first fifteen minutes via Tom Overtoom and Delvechio Blackson on the opening goal. In the twentieth minute, the White Lions however only pay after work. Giousis turned pretty freely on the edge of the penalty area and shot in a controlled manner. Unfortunately, the lead was short-lived. Six minutes after the 1-0, Jarne Streuckers equalizes for MVV again. The attacker benefited from weak intervention by Telstar’s defense.

Telstar was not put off by the equalizer and continued to come out strong. Rein Smit paid off the confidence of his trainers after almost half an hour of play by scoring twice within six minutes. At the 2-1, Smit tapped from close range on a pass from Blackson and with his second goal, the fast striker hit the ball unstoppably into the roof of the goal. Smit thus ensured the comfortable 3-1 rest position.
Hat trick
Telstar also continued to play excellent football in the second company. Shortly after the break, Smit was again the final destination of a good attack. De Castricummer once again hit the ball hard and high into the ropes: 4-1. It meant a hat trick for Smit, the first in his professional career.

However, the visitors from Maastricht did not want to give way and quickly fought their way back into the game. Within a few minutes, both Koen Kostons and Rein van Helden scored on behalf of MVV and the tension was completely back in the game. After the 4-3, MVV emphatically went looking for the equalizer, but in the last fifteen minutes Telstar regained control of the game.
Money in the pocket
Just before time Rein Smit got his deserved audience change. Glynor Plet came in for Smit and made the decision in the game with one of his first touches. Face to face with MVV goalkeeper Romain Matthys, Plet made no mistake and managed to shoot the ball into the goal for the 5-3 final score.
Thanks to the victory, Telstar climbs to ninth place in the first division. The next game awaits this Friday. Then Almere City will visit Velsen-Zuid.
