Lighting fireworks yourself is an important custom for many Dutch people on New Year’s Eve. So ordinary families in several municipalities ignored prohibitions en masse and lovingly risked a fine, which often did not materialise. Yet the call for a total ban on consumer fireworks is growing. How do we ensure that Jan with the cap gets done with banging?
