Co-founder of De Boer Supermarkets, Cornelia de Boer-Otten, passed away this year at the age of 92. In the 1950s she married Willem de Boer, one of Jan’s sons who started a grocery store in Coevorden. In 1955, that business merged with the grocery business of Evert de Boer (brother of Jan) from Hoogeveen. It then became De Boer Supermarkets, which later changed to Super De Boer and was taken over by Jumbo in 2009. In addition to the supermarket, De Boer-Otten also invented Mitra liquor store.
