The images are said to have been shot in the vicinity of Bachmoet, a city that had more than 70,000 inhabitants before the war, but of which only 10,000 are left today. Russian soldiers have been trying to take the city since the summer, but Ukraine has so far been able to hold back the offensive. That offensive came at a heavy human cost for both camps.
Ukraine has long feared a new offensive in which tens of thousands of Russian soldiers would be deployed with the sole task of “breaking through the defense lines and defusing the minefields with their bodies.” The well-trained troops would then literally “advance over the backs of the slain soldiers”.
