The holidays are upon us again. The time to get together with the family and enjoy a delicious Christmas dinner. Don’t have time to prepare everything, or don’t want to spend too much in these expensive times? Go gourmet together: that’s affordable and super cozy. Meat expert Jort gives useful tips to make the gourmet table super festive for Christmas.

Did you know that gourmet is really a Dutch tradition? It’s actually a form of shared dining: you prepare it together at the table, taste a tasty snack here and there and the preparation is also very pleasant. Putting a super festive meal on the table during such an expensive December month does not have to be difficult at all, according to meat specialist Jort van Vlees.nl. He gives some useful tips to get your gourmet to the next level to lift.

1. Make small pieces of meat yourself

Jort’s first tip is to make small hamburgers and meatballs yourself. “It takes a bit more work, but it tastes much better and it’s a lot cheaper than buying ready-made,” says Jort. On Vlees.nl you will find all sorts useful recipes for mini versions of pieces of meat, especially for gourmet.

2. Use quick-cooking products for children

Jort’s second practical tip concerns the youngest and most impatient family members at the table. “If you go gourmet with children, they prefer to eat within five minutes,” says Jort. “But that is of course not what the parents want. To ensure that children do not get bored quickly, you can put an omelette, pancake or slice of meat in the pan for them. It hardly needs to be cooked and the children will still be busy.”

3. Open dinner with a soup

“To make the Christmas dinner even more festive, you can serve your guests a tasty soup as an appetizer. That’s a nice opening to the dinner. This way you are also immediately ahead of the worst appetite at the start of the Christmas dinner,” says Jort. Extra nice: soup is very cheap to make yourself. At Vlees.nl you will find delicious recipes for soup.

4. Combine with color

Color is the keyword during the holidays, says Jort. “It is nice to make skewers to roast something other than a slave or pork steak. Brighten it up with colorful vegetables. For example, make a meat skewer with vegetables in the Christmas colors, green and red. Like peppers and zucchini. That not only looks cheerful, but is also tasty and a budget-friendly extra.”

5. Cover the table with free decorations

It is of course nice to dress the table nicely for Christmas. But you don’t need expensive Christmas decorations for that. Jort’s tip: go for a nice walk in the woods and collect your clothes there. “The table looks really nice with some pine cones, twigs and moss as decoration!”
