Bruges service flats under supervision for restraining residents
During a check on November 25, she found several serious shortages in the flats of care group Armonea, where 105 people live. That writes De Standaard, which reports, among other things, that people with dementia were fixed there.
“An assisted living home is intended for people who can live independently, with limited care needs,” explains Joris Moonens, spokesperson for the Agency for Care and Health (AZG). “The Inspectorate has found that the facility is increasingly aimed at residents who rather belong in a residential care center. There is not sufficient certainty that these people always receive the necessary care.”
According to Moonens, for example, there are several people living with advanced dementia. “They need a lot of care, and there are also safety issues involved. They were also restrained. That’s a tough decision that needs to involve the family. Sufficient nursing supervision is necessary, and the team here can’t provide that.” Moonens also emphasizes that an initial evaluation showed that there was no neglect.
Armonea puts things into perspective
MSF placed the institution under increased surveillance and will now monitor more. It is striking that the Health Care Inspectorate itself also took precautionary measures. In principle, this only happens if there are unacceptable risks to the safety or health of the residents.
According to Armonea itself, there were “smaller infrastructural points that were resolved very quickly”. “Doctors of the residents confirm that the conditions for their patients are correct,” it sounds.
MSF also decided to suspend the Vordenstein residential care center in Schoten for six months. In practice, it means a recording stop. The suspension comes after a period of increased supervision, which included persistent shortages in terms of staffing. The Armonea group now has four sites under increased supervision. Orpea has five locations. One establishment, the prestigious Park Lane in Antwerp, is facing the heaviest sanction: a withdrawal of its accreditation.
