The Grizzlys Wolfsburg had the table leader from Munich on the brink of defeat in the DEL, but in the end the Munich team celebrated.
Leader Munich continued its winning streak in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) by catching up late. In the top game at the Grizzlys Wolfsburg, coach Don Jackson’s team won 6: 5 (2: 2, 1: 3, 2: 0, 0: 0, 1: 0) after a penalty shoot-out on Thursday evening (December 8th, 2022). It was the ninth league win in a row for the runners-up.
Ortega and Redmond save Munich with two goals in overtime
Munich took the lead with an early double strike from Frederik Tiffels (1st) and Yasin Ehliz (2nd), the guests turned thanks to Jordan Murray (6th), Darren Archibald (12th), Spencer Machacek (26th), Dustin Jeffrey (26th) and Laurin Braun (37th) the game. Maximilian Kastner (40′), Austin Ortega (58′) and Zachary Redmond (59′) forced extra time for Munich.
In the shootout, Maksymilian Szuber scored the acclaimed winning goal. With the win, Munich increased their lead in the table. On Sunday (4.30 p.m.) the leaders of the table meet second-placed Adler Mannheim.
Home bankruptcy for Cologne against Schwenningen
The Kölner Haie had already landed hard back in everyday league life on Tuesday after winning the spectacular winter game in the DEL. Two days after the 4:2 triumph against Mannheim in the Müngersdorf stadium, the Kölner Haie conceded a bitter 4:1 defeat to the Schwenninger Wild Wings on their return to the hall.
Tylor Spink (2nd/60th), Boaz Bassen (22nd) and Miks Indrasis (37th) scored for Schwenningen, who remain in twelfth place in the table. Cologne, which slipped to sixth place, was able to shorten the lead by Brady Austin (47th).
