Ski racer Kira Weidle finished in the top 10 in the first World Cup downhill run of the winter and got off to a promising start to the World Cup season. The Vice World Champion from Starnberg took seventh place in Lake Louise, Canada, on Friday, Emma Aicher (Mahlstetten) was the second German active 31st.
Victory went to the Italian dominator Sofia Goggia, who won the overall ranking in the downhill for the third time last season. The Olympic champion Corinne Suter from Switzerland was only four hundredths behind the 30-year-old, third was also close behind Cornelia Hütter (Austria / +0.06 seconds). At the finish, Weidle was 0.97 seconds behind the winner.
Actually, Canadian-born Roni Remme should have started after moving to the German Ski Association (DSV), but the 26-year-old missed the entire season after a fall in the first training session in Lake Louise. Remme suffered a cruciate and medial ligament tear in his right knee.
On Saturday (20:30 CET) there will be another descent in Lake Louise. The men’s downhill in Beaver Creek/USA planned for Friday was canceled due to strong winds and persistent snowfall.
