Nick Kersten returns to NEC as head of football affairs. The 37-year-old Nijmegen resident will start working immediately and will sign a contract with the Nijmegen club until mid-2026.
Kersten previously worked at NEC from 2007 to 2021. He started at the club as a scout and since 2019, as head of scouting, he has determined the purchase and sale policy together with general manager Wilco van Schaik. His role changed with the entrance of Ted van Leeuwen early last year. He thus faded into the background.
Last summer, Kersten left for Excelsior, where he started working as technical director. He was promoted to the Eredivisie with the team from Rotterdam, but after a difference of opinion, Kersten closed the door to Excelsior in July of this year.
Kersten will implement the technical policy at NEC together with the new technical director Carlos Aalbers, who recently succeeded Van Leeuwen, and head of scouting Senol Kök. Head of Football Affairs is a new position at the club.
Clear plan
Kersten is looking forward to getting back to work at NEC. “I have been presented with a clear plan, which I would like to contribute to. The focus is on expanding the foundation that exists in the academy, scouting and the first team.”
Aalbers is happy with Kersten’s return. “Nick has proven to be a valuable asset to NEC in the past. With his knowledge and experience, he, together with me, Kök and his team, will play an important role in generating value for NEC.”
Aalbers, Kersten and Kök are waiting for a busy winter break. NEC wants to strengthen itself in January with a striker and a winger. In addition, players may leave who can count on little playing time in the second half of the season.
