In qualifying, however, Serbia came up trumps and went completely unbeaten in eight games. Dragan Stojković’s team left Portugal and Ireland behind. Cameroon had also initially landed a group victory, in particular keeping the Ivory Coast at a distance. However, that was not enough for one of the five African World Cup tickets. The Central Africans still had to play against Algeria in the third round and won the second leg almost 2-1 after extra time.

Serbia is taking part in a soccer World Cup for the 13th time. And it certainly made you sit up and take notice. Under the name of Yugoslavia, they reached the semi-finals at the first edition in 1930 and repeated this feat 32 years later. They last survived the group stage in 1998 (round of 16). Since then, the Serbs have missed the knockout stage three times – most recently in 2018. They have even played two finals on the continent, but lost out in 1960 and 1968. The last EM participation is now 22 years ago. So the Serbs haven’t achieved much in the recent past.

In the Al Janoub Stadium we experience the duel between two losers of the opening match day. Both teams remained goalless last Thursday. Cameroon lost 1-0 to Switzerland while Serbia lost 2-0 to Brazil. As a result, there is a lot of pressure today. Depending on the second game of the day, the loser might have very bad cards. It is advisable to score three points in order to have good cards for the further course of the preliminary round and ideally to have the matter in your own hands.

There are two changes for Cameroon compared to the first group game. André Onana is not in goal today. The Inter Milan keeper has been suspended for disciplinary reasons. The national association has not yet provided any more specific information on this. Devis Epassy moves between the posts for this. Rigobert Song also benched midfielder Samuel Gouet and promoted Pierre Kunde to the Indomitable Lions’ starting XI. There are also two changes among the Serbs. Dragan Stojković benched Filip Mladenović and Nemanja Gudelj. The places in the starting lineup go to Nemanja Maksimović and Filip Kostić. The latter has since recovered from a hamstring injury.
