Regular player at Fehérvár
In January 2021, Palkó Dárdai left his youth club Hertha BSC for Hungary after twelve first-team appearances. MOL Fehérvár FC lured with the prospect of more regular playing time and games in European competition. In 74 appearances to date, the offensive player has been directly involved in 35 goals and has now been nominated for the Hungarian national team for the first time.
“Of course I was very happy because it’s a kind of reward for the work of the whole year,” says Dárdai in an interview with Transfermarkt. Since leaving Germany, the native of Berlin has matured and, above all, has gained weight physically. “I’ve worked a lot on my athletics, I’ve built up a lot of upper body muscles. It made me even stronger, faster and more assertive,” said the left-footed player.
Dárdai to Mukhtar: Most valuable professionals from the Hertha youth
Hungary meets Luxembourg in a friendly on Thursday evening (8 p.m./in the TM live ticker) and Dárdai can hope for his debut. The 23-year-old would follow in the footsteps of his father Pál Dárdai, who made 61 appearances for Magyarok between 1998 and 2010. Szabolcs Huszti, coach in Fehérvár for about a month, also has a past in the national team (51 caps). His second coaching job started with two wins from six games, but Dárdai still has words of praise for his coach: “He has a clear line and knows exactly what he needs from the players. I’m sure he will have a long and successful career as a coach.”
Palkó Dárdai on returning to the Bundesliga: “It’s still the goal”
Dárdai himself is aiming high after his forthcoming debut with the national team. His current market value of 800,000 euros is likely to increase further in the forthcoming market value update by Nemzeti Bajnokság. The contract with MOL Fehérvár runs until June 2025, but in the long term it should go back to Germany. “My goal is definitely to play in the Bundesliga again, no question about it. Even if I feel comfortable in Hungary, I always strive to develop myself. And the Bundesliga must therefore still be the goal,” says Dárdai.
