A fly lived in the dressing room where I spent a few hours. It was the nicest fly I’ve ever met. He always wanted to sit on me. When I tried to wave him away, he saw it as an invitation to a fine game, in which he had to return as quickly as possible to me, the glorious human being who had come to visit him.

I had heard somewhere that flies go to sleep when it’s dark. That is why you only suffer from mosquitoes at night, and not from flies. I turned off the light.

Of course then someone came into the dressing room and thought she was disturbing me in a deep meditation. ‘Oh sorry!’

‘No, it doesn’t matter’, I said, ‘I just turned off the light because of a fly.’

There was a confused silence in which I think I was judged as if I was crazy. Then the fly buzzed and I could say ‘That one’ by way of illustration.
