Ex-Hoffenheim loan Reiss Nelson hopes for a future at Arsenal

After a brace against Forest

One game, three goals involved: Arsenal right winger Reiss Nelson’s season debut in the Premier League last weekend could hardly have gone much better. In the Gunners’ 5-0 home win over promoted Nottingham Forest, the 22-year-old quickly made the preliminary decision with his goals in the 49th and 52nd minutes, and then added Thomas Partey’s fourth goal. The ex-Hoffenheimer’s contract (7 goals in 23 BL games in 2018/19) on the Thames expires in 2023 – Nelson has now commented on his open future.

The Arsenal native only returned to London in the summer from a one-year loan from Feyenoord Rotterdam. For the Eredivisie club, he contributed four goals in 32 games and scored seven goals. When asked about the convincing performance against Forest, he reflected on his positive sporting development in the Netherlands. “I feel like I’ve matured and learned. I think it helped my game a lot to play in big games against big teams like Roma in the Conference League finals and especially against teams like Ajax in an atmosphere that I haven’t really experienced before,” the right-footer said. The Athleticquoted.

The twelve-time England Under-21 international is grateful to Feyenoord for giving me the opportunity to play. It only made me hungrier to be able to come back to Arsenal and play a lot more here as well.” This is Nelson’s clear aspiration for the future, as he reiterated: “I’m 22 now and I’ll be 23 soon. It’s all about the Finding rhythm and trying to start week after week and just level up. (…) I want to get to a rhythm that I play regularly.”

Nelson on Arsenal: “Very strong bond and love for the club”

It remains to be seen whether this will be granted to him at Arsenal by coach Mikel Arteta in view of the powerful competition for players such as Gabriel Martinelli, Marquinhos or top access Gabriel Jesus. In any case, Nelson does not rule out an extension of his contract with his home club, which expires at the end of the season: “I never doubted myself at this football club. Arsenal is a team I’ve been with since I was eight years old and I have a very, very strong bond and love for the club. Of course there were times when I was a bit down when I wasn’t playing or sitting on the bench. But my plan was never that I leave the club.”

Rather, he wants to build on his recent performance in the remaining time and thus gain the opportunity for a longer future with the current leaders of the Premier League. “Getting a new deal would be great and I’d love to keep getting involved with the club. Any opportunity I get I will try to take advantage of.”
