Surprise from Gothenburg
Not Malmö FF and not a club from Stockholm either, but a surprise team from Gothenburg: BK Häcken are Swedish football champions for the first time in the club’s history. After a 4-0 win in the city derby at IFK Göteborg on Sunday, the club from Sweden’s second largest city can no longer be ousted from first place in the Allsvenskan with a match to go in the season.
“Swedish champions”, the BK cheered on his Twitter account. Häcken is the first club in Sweden’s top football league since Kalmar FF 2008 to win a league title for the first time. Malmö FF had won the title in the past two years – but after a disappointing season, the Swedish record champions have no chance of international business at least via the league, in which they recently played twice against Union Berlin in the group stage of the Europa League had lost. (Correction: The sentence about Djurgarden’s runner-up was incorrect and has been removed)
BK Häcken has been coached by the experienced Norwegian Per-Mathias Högmo since summer 2021. The most valuable player in the team is 22-goal striker Alexander Jeremejeff (29), hitherto successful Allsvenskan 2022 attacker, with a market value of EUR 2 million.
