Signs with the indication Woonerf still do not indicate that a maximum speed is attached to this. Many may have learned during their driving lessons that you have to drive ‘walking pace’ here, but how hard is that exactly?
Municipalities have complained in the past about a lack of clarity with regard to the speed limit in residential areas. The government already promised in 2012 to come up with a new sign because the existing sign does not explicitly make clear what the maximum speed is and there is a lot of uncertainty about it. Such a road sign, however, never came.
15 kilometers per hour
Currently, residential areas are still marked by the same residential area signs with no speed limit. However, some motorists appear to be insufficiently aware of the fact that the maximum speed here is only 15 kilometers per hour. In 1998 a trial process was carried out in Dordrecht, in which the Supreme Court ultimately determined that walking speed is a maximum of 15 km/h.
Residents stick stickers
Children, the elderly and cyclists are especially at risk when speeding in residential areas. The legislator leaves it up to the road authority to clarify the maximum speed in residential areas, whether or not explicitly. In most places, however, that doesn’t happen. In many municipalities the signs have therefore been supplemented by residents with a sticker indicating the maximum speed.
