The President of the Government and leader of the PSOE, Pedro Sánchezwill be the next president of the Socialist International in substitution of Yorgos Papandreou since no more alternative candidates have been presented to head this organization, according to what socialist sources have confirmed to EFE.

In this way, Sánchez will become the the first Spaniard to chair this organization, which currently brings together 132 social democratic, socialist and labor political parties around the world with the aim of “consolidating” this type of policy.

Pedro Sanchez will relieve former Greek Prime Minister Yorgos Papandreou as president of the Socialist Internationalwho has headed this organization since 2006.

The term to present candidacies for the Presidency of the Socialist International ended on Monday without other people having formally expressed their willingness to assume this responsibility beyond Sánchez.

For this reason, it will not be necessary to hold elections and the President of the Spanish Government will be formally appointed President of the Socialist International for a term of four years at the XXVI Congress, which will take place from November 25 to 27 in Madrid.

Sánchez’s will is to provide more “package” to the Socialist International as well as to increase the “influence” of this organization in relevant international forums such as the UN and work to seek the return of parties such as the German Social Democratic Party, according to socialist sources.
