The extraordinary football World Cup starts in Qatar on November 20 and continues until December 18. In Finland, MTV and Yleisradio are responsible for the match broadcasts in cooperation, which this time does not intend to send its commentators to Qatar.
Yle takes only two journalists to Qatar, who do not focus so much on football but report more on the social situation in Qatar.
– We cover events and phenomena both on and off the field in a journalistic manner. Football fans can enjoy the game and its analysis, but we also report on the dark side of the tournament and talking points in all our media, Yle Urheilu’s head Joose Palonen tells In Yle’s article.
In Yle’s competition studio, familiar faces can be seen conversing with guests and experts. The team of experts for the games includes the Huuhkajie’s head coach Markku Kanerva, Antti Pohja, Erkka V. Lehtola, Heidi Pihlaja and Marianne Miettinen.
Kanerva wishes success for the traditional football superpower.
– After Brazil won the World Cup in 1970, I became a Brazil fan, and I hope they win the sixth championship, says the head coach.
There are no big surprises among the narrators. They talked about games in Finnish Matti Härkönen, Simo Leinonen, Brother Engstrom, Toni Saukkola, Tero Kainulainen and Mikko Aaltonen. In Swedish Christian Vuojärvi, Christopher Herberts, Sebastian Backman, Christian Karlsson, Mattias Simonsen and Mats Ahlnäs.
Yle will show a total of 42 of the tournament’s 64 matches on its channels, including the second semi-final match and the final. MTV also shows the games live, and all post-broadcasts can be found on Yle Areena.
