Robert Lewandowski has to prepare for the end of his Champions League season before FC Barcelona’s home game against his ex-club FC Bayern Munich on Wednesday evening. His former backup Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting is currently playing big.
FC Bayern wants to talk about extending striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting’s contract in due course. The 33-year-old attacker is in top form for the Champions League game against FC Barcelona and world footballer Robert Lewandowski on Wednesday (9:00 p.m. / DAZN).
“He has reported back really well after various failures,” said sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic. “I’m very happy because this is a player who fits very well into our team with his character,” Salihamidzic told the TV station Bild.
Since Cameroon’s national player was used in the Munich strike center, the nine-man discussion in coach Julian Nagelsmann’s team has fallen silent.
Before the reunion with Lewandowski, it is particularly piquant that the long-time backup Choupo-Moting could finally shoot the world footballer out of the premier class.
Choupo-Moting could kick Lewandowski out of the Champions League
Normally, when the Bayern game kicks off, Barcelona no longer have a chance of progressing, because Inter Milan could already get the round of 16 ticket after Bayern in Pilsen.
“It’s not all over for Lewa,” said Salihamidzic and sees a remaining chance for the Catalans. “But I’m more focused on FC Bayern than looking at what’s going on with FC Barcelona.”
The Munich sports director is taking his time when it comes to the future of the 34-year-old at the end of the contract. “Of course we’re happy that he’s in such good form. Let’s play the Choupo and then we’ll talk about it when the time comes,” said Salihamidzic.
Choupo-Moting came to Munich from Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer in October 2020. After being slated to be Lewandowski’s back-up until Lewandowski’s departure for Barcelona this summer, Choupo-Moting recently used his chances of probation.
The striker has scored four goals in the last three Bayern games. Now he also wants to convince in a duel with Lewandowski.
