Statement of the day | The party lights will stay off this year to save energy

Energy prices are still unprecedentedly high. We try in every way possible to save on our energy bill. With the holidays approaching, that begs the question: will you light your party lights this year? Or are you going for a sober Christmas?

Entrepreneurs in the center of Groningen dim the party lights. It will be on later this year and off earlier. Exuberant sprinkling of light now would be inappropriate, they think.

,,We still have an exemplary role”, says Eric Bos, chairman of the Groningen City Club. “We talk about ‘close doors, you are welcome’, give savings tips, so we have to participate ourselves.”

This is not a direct financial saving, however. All in all, it saves the club about 5000 euros.

What are you planning with the party lights this year? Do you unpack as usual or do you save electricity because of the high costs?
