BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – The FDP parliamentary group leader Christian Dürr was satisfied with the decision of Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) to continue using the three remaining nuclear power plants. “It’s about not making the right decision for parties, but ultimately for the country,” said Dürr on Tuesday in Berlin. Of course, coalition partners would come from different positions, but none of the parties in their election manifesto in the last federal election had included an extension of the lifetime of nuclear power plants.
On Monday, Scholz declared a day-long dispute within the traffic light coalition, especially between the Greens and the FDP, with a clear announcement. The Chancellor instructed the responsible ministers to make legislative proposals so that the three nuclear power plants Isar 2, Neckarwestheim 2 and Emsland can continue to operate beyond the end of the year until April 15, 2023 at the latest. Scholz made use of his guideline authority.
The Chancellor’s decision fell short of the demands of the FDP, which wanted all three reactors to run until 2024. At a party conference over the weekend, the Greens had decided, if necessary, to support stretching operations for the Isar 2 and Neckarwestheim 2 kilns until mid-April 2023./ppz/DP/men
