When VfB Stuttgart was looking for a successor to Pellegrino Matarazzo, a new name emerged: Jess Thorup. The “BT” and the “Stuttgart News“ unanimously report that the 52-year-old is in Stuttgart for talks – according to the Danish newspaper, Thorup is about to become involved with VfB. He has been without a club since leaving FC Copenhagen last month after a two-year tenure. According to the “SN”, in addition to the Dane, there is another unnamed coach on the list of Swabians who will speak to both candidates on Sunday and Monday.
Thorup has been on the touchline in 88 games for Copenhagen, averaging 1.88 points. After winning the championship in the previous season, the record title holder had a weak start to the new season and was ninth out of twelve in the Superligaen at the time of the split after ten match days. Since changing to the coaching position, Copenhagen have improved by two places.
Germany would not be new territory for Thorup, as he played for KFC Uerdingen between 1996 and 1998 and played 39 games in the 2nd Bundesliga, among other things. It is said that the coach speaks good German and is also considered a developer. As a coach, he had mainly gained experience in his home country, where he worked professionally for Esbjerg fB, FC Midtjylland and Copenhagen as well as for the Danish youth league. Abroad, he worked for Belgian clubs KAA Gent (2018-2020) and KRC Genk (2020).
Michael Wimmer is currently looking after VfB on an interim basis, who beat VfL Bochum 4-1 at his premiere on Saturday and thus scored his first win of the season – Stuttgart went out of the relegation zone in 14th place. Sporting director Sven Mislintat recently emphasized that it one option is that Wimmer “maybe make several games”. The aim is to find “the most accurate and best possible solution for, ideally, another 1000 days, 100 games and not for one, three or five games”.
