There is no doubt that the key to a country’s growth lies in the commitment of its citizens. An active and participatory society, not from the simple “electoral democracy,” which is limited to participation in the electoral processes, but from militancy in political organizations and other mechanisms of citizen participation, is what strengthens a democratic system and at the same time , promotes the control of the activities carried out by officials and other political representatives.
The era in which we live makes this participation easier for us, since the sources of information are almost inexhaustible. Instantly we can access the news and we can know the events that occur in our country and in the world. In a society bombarded with information, it is almost impossible to be oblivious to the reality that surrounds us. However, this situation is a double-edged sword. We can fall into misinformation if we only limit ourselves to listening to “a bell”, so our citizen duty is to be attentive to the veracity of the information received.
The media play a preponderant role in the democratic development of a country, and in the political formation of citizens. Thus, an interdependence is established between informants and the informed that, in the long run, marks the course of a country.
As citizen knowledge about the political system increases, democracy becomes more stable. In other words, experienced and committed citizens in the political field are key to strengthening the political system and democracy itself. On the contrary, an uninformed citizenry is easily managed and manipulated by the power in power.
Events have recently occurred in our country that marked a before and after in our democracy. The media and social networks were flooded with news and opinions about it. We can choose to look at them “from the outside,” or we can use information about those events to inform our political thinking. What is undeniable is that the information is present. We just need to make a commitment to be informed.
Events are happening in the world that will mark the course of our history. The war in Ukraine that started in February is still going on and Europe is bracing for a harsh winter with power shortages. We may think that this is foreign to us, but the reality is that it is not. Globalization means that each fact, each situation that occurs in one place on the planet, will inevitably have repercussions on all of humanity.
The current citizen cannot and should not be oblivious to what is happening in his city, in his country and in the world. Only by understanding the current problems can we solve them, and each and every one of us plays a leading role in this regard. In addition, good information is not only applicable to the political sphere, but it is also what sets the course for our daily activities. In fact, businessman Ricardo Semler once said: “If you look at any type of modern organization and think ‘What is the most powerful instrument of power?’, you will see that it is information.”
In summary, as citizens we have the duty to keep ourselves informed, in order to fully exercise our democratic role, and to be able to demand from our rulers the proper functioning of our institutions. We all want a better country, and we are all responsible for making this possible.
