After throwing a cup: game between Alemannia Aachen and Gladbach II stopped

The Regionalliga West game between Alemannia Aachen and Borussia Mönchengladbach’s second team was canceled shortly before the end on Sunday. According to Alemannia, there had previously been a cup thrown from the stands. As the “Aachener Zeitung” reports, the linesman of the game is said to have been hit in the back of the head. At the time of the break in the 88th minute, Gladbach was leading 1-0 in front of 6,900 spectators after a goal from Steffen Meuer (3rd minute).

Probably the strangest game abandonment in the league. Because a goalpost broke in the 88th minute of the game between Borussia Mönchengladbach and Werder Bremen, the score was 1-1. The game is rated 2-0 points and goals for Bremen because Gladbach cannot provide a replacement in time.

Oct. 31, 1972 – Eintracht Braunschweig vs. Eintracht Frankfurt

For the third time in Bundesliga history, heavy fog forced the match Eintracht Braunschweig – Eintracht Frankfurt to be abandoned. After 45 minutes the score is 3:0. The new edition wins Braunschweig 2:1. Goalkeeper Bernd Franke (Braunschweig) has to parry a free kick despite the poor visibility – they tried in vain to clear the fog with burning straw bales.

Dec. 07, 1963 – Hamburger SV versus Borussia Dortmund

In the first Bundesliga season, dense fog in Hamburg’s Volkspark Stadium brought the match between HSV and Borussia Dortmund to an early end after 61 minutes when the score was 2-1. In the new edition, Hamburg wins 2-1 thanks to two goals from Uwe Seeler (note: photo from another game).

Dec. 02, 1967 – VfB Stuttgart versus Borussia Neunkirchen

Even in the game VfB Stuttgart – Borussia Neunkirchen, the increasingly poor visibility does not allow the game to continue. Cancellation at the score of 0:0. Stuttgart won the replay 2-1 (note: the photo shows Gilbert Gress in a game against BVB).

Nov. 27, 1976 – 1. FC Kaiserslautern versus Fortuna Dusseldorf

In Kaiserslautern, the match between FCK and Fortuna Düsseldorf was stopped after 76 minutes at 0:1 after throwing bottles. Referee Rudolf Frickel sees the safety of the players no longer guaranteed. The game is rated 2-0 for Düsseldorf.

April 11, 2008 – 1. FC Nuremberg versus VfL Wolfsburg

After torrential rain, the match between 1. FC Nürnberg and VfL Wolfsburg ended at 1-0 before the start of the second half. In the second attempt on dry ground, Nuremberg wins 1-0.

April 1, 2011 – FC St. Pauli vs. Schalke 04

Two minutes before the end of the game FC St. Pauli – FC Schalke 04, assistant referee Thorsten Schiffner was hit in the neck by a full beer mug. Referee Deniz Aytekin stopped the game when the score was 0:2. This is how the game is scored at the end.

March 18, 2022 – VfL Bochum vs. Bor. Mönchengladbach

Assistant referee Christian Gittelmann was hit in the head by a drink cup in the 68th minute of VfL Bochum’s game against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Referee Benjamin Cortus immediately interrupts the game. The stadium announcer later announced the demolition. At that point it was 2-0 for Gladbach.
