An uncontrolled bushfire, fueled by rising temperatures, threatens some suburbs of the city of Perth in Western Australia. This has been reported by the local authorities.
The forest fire that broke out yesterday has already reduced about 100 hectares to ashes. An emergency alert has been issued for the areas at risk. Emergency services have made it clear to residents that they are “in danger and must take immediate action to survive”. “Lives and homes are threatened,” it said.
The mercury in Perth is forecast to rise from about 34 degrees today to 40 degrees on Saturday. The authorities fear that the flames could reach residential areas as a result of the strong wind.
Meanwhile, a second wildfire in the southwestern part of the state since Tuesday afternoon local time is “under control but not yet contained,” authorities said. Evacuated residents near the town of Kirup, about 220 kilometers south of Perth, were advised not to return home as the situation remains “extremely dangerous”.
Western Australia experienced record heat this summer and Perth was hotter than 40 degrees for no less than ten days in a row. Last month, the highest temperature ever recorded in Australia was recorded in the coastal town of Onslow at 50.7 degrees Celsius.
