FC Sevilla missed a victory in the Spanish football championship when coach Jorge Sampaoli made his debut. Three days before the Champions League game against Borussia Dortmund, the team had to settle for a 1-1 (1-0) draw against Athletic Bilbao.
Óliver Torres (4th minute) put the hosts ahead. Mikel Vesga equalized for Bilbao in the 73rd minute. Athletic ended the game with a man down after Ander Herrera saw red for an emergency brake (90+4).
FC Sevilla parted ways with their previous coach Julen Lopetegui after the 4-1 loss against Dortmund last Wednesday.
For successor Sampaoli, it is the second engagement with the six-time Europa League winner, with whom he was already under contract in the 2016/17 season. This Tuesday (9 p.m.) BVB hosts Sevilla for the second leg.
