Children and young people should see less advertising for unhealthy foods. Over 300 paediatricians are calling for a law to ban advertising for so-called junk food from 6 am to 11 pm on TV, the Internet and radio.
The appeal by the Professional Association of Pediatricians (BVKJ), the consumer organization Foodwatch and the German Alliance for Non-Communicable Diseases is aimed at Federal Minister of Food Cem Özdemir (Greens).
The consequences of being overweight
Advertising for products containing fat and sugar, such as pizza, fries, ready meals or sweets, encouraged people to eat unhealthy fattening foods. That is why clear restrictions are needed here. Above all, because many commercials are specially tailored to young consumers.
Currently, 15 percent of children are considered overweight, six percent even as obese (obese). According to the medical association, the number increased during the pandemic.
The consequences of being overweight can be serious and range from high blood pressure, diabetes and lipid metabolism disorders to joint misalignments and kidney diseases.
