2023 Status now free transfer
N’Golo Kanté has been under contract with Chelsea FC since 2016, making him one of the three longest-serving professionals in the Blues. It is currently very questionable whether the 31-year-old midfielder will have the chance to manifest his status beyond the end of his contract in 2023. As “The Athletic” reported, ongoing talks since 2021 about continuing the cooperation have so far gone without any significant progress.
Kanté has turned down the latest offer from the new ownership group led by Todd Boehly, sources say. The professional is said to have been offered a contract for two more years plus an option. Apparently, the conditions are not satisfactory for Kanté, because a new three-year contract with the possibility of a fourth season is said to have been in the pipeline under the previous leadership. In addition: The 33-year-old new signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was signed until 2024, the 31-year-old defender Kalidou Koulibaly even signed until 2026.
Kanté’s injury history may well have played a role in the club’s design of the new contract. The veteran had to sit out more often in the past. However, if he is on the pitch, he provides his own arguments. In principle, Kanté could imagine ending his career at Chelsea. The prerequisite for this, however, is that both parties approach each other again.
Two other English clubs, a Spanish representative, a German club and a French club are said to be interested in the professional’s services should he be available on a free transfer in 2023. Kanté has played 262 competitive games for the Londoners since his €35.8 million move from Leicester City, scoring 13 goals and providing 15 assists.
