French tennis star Garcia reaches last eight at US Open

Tennis star Caroline Garcia is the first to reach the quarterfinals of the US Open. The 17th-seeded Frenchwoman settled in two sets with the American Alison Riske-Amritraj, who was classified as number 29: 6-4 6-1. The match lasted 1 hour and 21 minutes.

It is the second time for 28-year-old Garcia that she is in the quarterfinals at a grand slam tournament. The last time was in 2017 at Roland Garros, where she lost to the Czech Karolina Pliskova.

For a place in the last four, Garcia will play against twelfth-seeded American Cori Gauff. She defeated China’s Zhang Shuai in straight sets: 7-5 7-5.
