Costa Rica intercepts 2.5 tons of cocaine in container for Belgium
Police in Costa Rica intercepted 2.5 tons of cocaine in a container of fruit in the port of Limón. The container was intended for Belgium. The huge load of drugs can be seen in images posted by the Costa Rican authorities on Twitter.
Limón has always been an export port for pineapples, bananas, sugar and coffee. But in recent years, the remote port area has become very popular among drug smugglers. Drugs coming from Costa Rica are regularly seized in the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp.
In 2020, the police in Costa Rica say they made the largest drug discovery in the country’s history when more than 5,000 kilos of cocaine were seized that was intended for the Netherlands.
