Stinking smoke ravages Moscow due to severe forest fires | Abroad

A thick layer of stinking smoke hangs over Moscow, the result of fierce forest fires that have been raging for days about 200 kilometers east of the Russian capital. The smoke limits the view.

In the Ryazan region, wildfires have destroyed more than 11,000 hectares. It has been very dry and warm in recent weeks and the fire is still fueled by strong gusts of wind.

According to the Russian newspaper Kommersant, the smoke has now also reached Moscow, which is about 200 kilometers away. The smoke layer causes odor nuisance on Sunday and limits visibility.

The local authorities do expect improvement in the coming days, because it is going to rain in Moscow. Nearly 10,000 firefighters and emergency workers are active in Ryazan to fight the blaze. VEF/RHA/
