Borussia Mönchengladbach stole a point from FC Bayern thanks to goalkeeper Yann Sommer. The Swiss broke a record in Munich and could soon extend it.
Gladbach’s traveling fans loudly celebrated their man of the game. “Yann Sommer, oho”, they chanted after Bayern’s 1-1 fright Borussia Monchengladbach at FC Bayern. Christoph Kramer even wrote a little rhyme about the famous Swiss, who with 19 repelled shots on goal made more saves than any Bundesliga goalkeeper since data collection began in 1992 (previous best: 14). “Good man, Yann,” enthused Borussia professional Kramer.
Swiss record Bundesliga player
World class, one with an asterisk – everyone from Gladbach and Bavaria was absolutely in agreement when it came to evaluating the big Munich summer evening. After 96 minutes of hard work, the 33-year-old Sommer stood in the Munich Arena with a lunch box in his hands and spoke more soberly than euphorically about his performance. “I’m glad I managed a game like this,” said Sommer, who had saved ball after ball with his hands and feet on the ground and in the air. With his 266th league appearance, the Swiss also became his country’s record player in the Bundesliga.
“With a lot of work, you get into such a flow at some point,” said Sommer. Bayern professional Joshua Kimmich named him “the best man on the pitch”. And Thomas Müller groaned: “We don’t know any different, that Yann Sommer always makes the best game of the year against us. He was always there for the big things.” Only once was he without a chance to defend himself, in the late 1-1 by Leroy Sané.
Farke: “A world-class performance”
Gladbach coach Daniel Farke was only partially amazed by the summer show. “I never made a secret of the fact that Yann, together with Manuel Neuer, is the best goalkeeper in the league. For me, he gave a world-class performance.” And then Farke also said: “We are all happy that we have him as number one in the box.”
Contract extension suggested
For how much longer? Sommer’s contract expires at the end of the season. Borussia wants to extend – and it seems to be on the right track. Sommer reported “ongoing talks” and indicated that “perhaps in the next few days” there could already be something that could be informed: “I’ve been here at Gladbach for eight years. If it didn’t go well together, I’d be a long time Not here anymore.”
