“Just all those people, I enjoy this so much. I haven’t been in the city for four years!” Cock (photo) and dozens of residents of a nursing home in Alkmaar had a great day this week. They drove to the fair accompanied by volunteers.

It is part of the ‘Popular Day’. Every year, fairground operators and the municipality of Alkmaar arrange music, donuts and poffertjes for disabled children and the elderly, and enjoy a stroll between the roller coaster, the haunted house and the camel race.

Residents of Westerhout gathered downstairs in the hall around half past twelve in order to walk and ride in a procession to the city center. “Such an outing is very important,” says Roos, daughter of the elderly Corrie. “You notice that they don’t come out very much.”

To end the sweltering day, the group received a free ice cream at Ci Vediamo on the Ritsevoort. This was arranged by Sandra, the daughter-in-law of one of the residents of Westerhout.

The fair in the city center of Alkmaar will last until tomorrow.
