Belgium provides 8 million euros non-lethal aid to Ukrainian army | Inland

Belgium will provide non-lethal support to the Ukrainian army via NATO for 8 million euros. This was decided by the federal council of ministers at the request of Minister of Foreign Affairs Hadja Lahbib (MR). Our country will contribute in the field of first aid material, winter clothing or – if the needs are already met there – other material such as night vision goggles or pharmaceuticals.

“Ukrainians have been fighting a courageous fight for their freedom and their country for six months,” Prime Minister Alexander De Croo (Open Vld) said in a press release. Earlier this week, he told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that his country can continue to count on Belgian support. “We are now putting words to action. Belgium is once again meeting the concrete needs and will be supplying Ukraine with vital equipment in the coming weeks.”

According to Lahbib, winter is heralding itself as a potentially crucial phase in the conflict. “It is therefore very important that the Ukrainian armed forces are provided with the necessary equipment to continue to face the Russian aggression,” the minister said in the press release. “I am proud that our country was one of the first to make equipment available. Now, six months after the start of this unprovoked, unjustified and illegal war, we continue to do so. Our country remains above all in solidarity with the Ukrainian people and will continue to support its sovereignty in every possible way.”

Voluntary contribution

It is a voluntary contribution to NATO’s Comprehensive Assistance Package (CAP) Trust Fund for the provision of non-lethal aid to Ukraine. The contribution is a result of the NATO summit in Madrid at the end of June. It was then decided, partly after a plea from Belgium, to significantly expand the support via the fund. Belgian companies will be able to participate in public tenders, the government announced.
