Antoni Aguilera, honorary president of the Red Cross in Catalonia and Gold Medalist of the institution, died this Thursday in Barcelona at the age of 89, the humanitarian organization reported.

Aguilera held the presidency of the Red Cross in Catalonia during the years 2015-2019 and 2005-2007 and during his administration projects considered “essential” were launched, such as “the fight against the chronicity of poverty, care and reception of refugees and migrants in Catalonia and the dissemination of first aid among the younger population”.

Aguilera began his career as a volunteer in the local world, in Sant Cugat del Vallès (Barcelona), as a first aid trainer and ended up occupying the highest management position of the Red Cross.

He was president of the Red Cross assembly in Sant Cugat del Vallès-Rubí between 1990 and 2007 and vice president of the entity in the Barcelona demarcation between 2005 and 2006. He received the Gold Medal from the Spanish Red Cross in 2008.
