On Twitter, an Ikea announcement that it will no longer eat fries in the restaurant is doing the rounds. That’s behind it.

Wednesday evening, a post by journalist Boris Reitschuster aroused tempers on Twitter.

The reactions: very different. Some spoke of “re-education”, others asked what exactly the problem was – after all, people go to Ikea for the furniture and not primarily for the food. Some ranted about a boycott – others were happy that these people would no longer be found in the furniture store.

But what is right now? Will Ikea forego fries in the future for climate protection reasons?

On Thursday morning, Ikea replied via Twitter that “there are currently no plans to remove French fries from the range”.

As BZ found out when asked, the notice was a reference from Würzburg. “Of all 54 Ikea furniture stores in Germany, only the furniture stores in Würzburg and Bremerhaven currently do not offer French fries,” said a spokeswoman.

And further: “We are far from lecturing customers and we are not interested in restricting our food range, but in adding many healthier and more environmentally conscious options and leaving the choice to our customers.”

There can therefore be no talk of paternalism. “It is in line with our philosophy to enable people to have a better everyday life – and we want to do that with a wide range from which customers can choose what suits their preferences and/or is good for them. In principle, our range of dishes and our food offerings are constantly evolving. In doing so, we focus on what our customers want,” said the spokeswoman.
