Mainz 05 and Union Berlin neutralized each other in sweaty temperatures. The second half was weak, the first even weaker.
Rarely did a result go better with the course of the game than on Saturday (08/14/2022) in Mainz. The 0-0 between FSV and Union Berlin was the logical consequence of a game with temperatures of more than 30 degrees and without great chances to score. Since both teams started the season with victories in the league and DFB Cup, they can certainly live with the point.
Rönnow defused Lee’s lob
From the start, the hosts Mainz showed great respect for the Berliners, against whom they had a poor record: just one win in six Bundesliga duels.
Both teams went to work with commitment and defended in a disciplined manner. As a result, hardly anything worth mentioning happened in the penalty areas until the break. The most dangerous was the lob from Mainz’s Jae-Sung Lee in the 14th minute, which Frederik Rönnow deflected to a corner.
Union with long-range shots
The second half began with two attempts by Union from a distance: Niko Gießelmann slammed onto the goal roof (51′) and Julian Ryerson shot wide to the right (53′). Mainz also had a mini double chance five minutes later: Stach tried from ten meters, Onisiwo from afar, but Rönnow was correct in each case.
The game then remained a little more lively than in the first half, but that was no art either. There were no really good opportunities and, once there was space, the last pass usually failed on both sides.
Mainz joker with actions
Substitute Marlon Mustapha from Mainz was an eye-catcher with a speed dribbling down the left flank and a decent finish. His team-mate Delano Burgzorg, who also came on as a substitute, was unlucky in the closing stages as his shot was deflected.
Otherwise, the spectators in the stands were largely able to concentrate on fanning themselves and enjoying ice cream.
Mainz now against Augsburg
Mainz continue on the third matchday on Saturday (3:30 p.m.) at FC Augsburg. Union plays against RB Leipzig on Saturday (6.30 p.m.).
