• Elon Musk explains via Twitter what the Tesla logo represents
• It had previously been discussed in forums, and the wildest assumptions came up
• Designer discloses possible flaws in Tesla logo design

Up until 2017, there was much speculation about the meaning of the Tesla logo. For example, a wide variety of assumptions were made in the Quora forum: from the hypothesis that the T was an abstract replica of Nikola Tesla’s face to the assumption that it was just a futuristically designed T, everything was included. There were also some forum members who were correct.

Twitter user asks Elon Musk about the meaning of the Tesla logo

At some point, Twitter user Peter James Dean’s curiosity got the better of him. Without further ado, he asked Elon Musk directly and actually received an answer:

In the picture you can see that the logo represents the cross section of an electric motor

The logo thus represents the cross-section of an electric motor, just as the SpaceX logo describes a rocket trajectory. To illustrate the whole thing, another Twitter user posted an image:

The fact that the logo also closely resembles the initials of the company is probably no coincidence.

DC or AC Motor: Did the Tesla Logo Go Wrong?

One of the Quora users who guessed the correct meaning of the logo before Musk’s explanation is designer Daniel Fourie from California. He explains in a forum post that the designers – according to media reports RO Studio was entrusted with the job – used the cross-section of a DC motor, although Tesla only uses AC motors. Whether this is a bug or has a good reason is unclear. Musk also did not comment further on this topic on Twitter.
