It was Roxeanne Hazes who took center stage in the kick-off of a brand new season of best singers. Nielson, Claudia de Breij and Jaap Reesema, among others, sang to her, but Hazes got wet eyes during Sarita Lorena’s performance.

That was not easy. The Brazilian Sarita Lorena sang the song Stranger to me, a song that has meaning not only for Hazes, but also for herself. ,,I’ve got my potty on wrong and toxic I’ve had relationships before, so I was very comfortable with that,” she explained. Hazes added to her: ,,I also have a toxic experienced a relationship, in which aggression unfortunately also happened. And that’s a really shitty time in my life. I was way too young and that just remains a difficult thing.”

Already from the first notes that Sarita Lorena played, it was clear how Hazes became emotional. A few seconds later, tears welled up in her eyes. Meanwhile, Sarina Lorena unpacked: she had translated a chorus of the song into Portuguese. “Wooh”, Jaap Reesema yelled.

Afterwards, Hazes decided that the profit of the episode should go to Sarita Lorena.

Outside of all the performances, Hazes spoke very candidly about her youth. For example, the reason why Roxeanne only wanted to join at best singers when her friend Erik Zwens was also allowed to go to Seville for the recordings.

According to the 29-year-old Hazes scion, this was partly due to the break with her mother Rachel. “The biggest blow came when my father died, my mother decided to write a book and I didn’t have my mother with me for nine months,” she revealed. “Just when you need her so much to mourn. I’ve had a picture of my mom and dad with me every night, crying to me every night, ‘Please come back.’”

Partly because of that event, Hazes had ‘a huge blow’ and therefore suffered from homesickness. “You damage someone with that for the rest of their life. I am a grown woman, but it is very difficult for me to sleep alone. Then I get a stomachache and I can’t sleep. I vowed never to feel that way again.”
