The number of people hospitalized as a result of an infection with the monkeypox virus has almost doubled since last week.
Until last week, six people had been hospitalized in the Netherlands. That number has now risen to eleven. RIVM will inform NU.nl about this on Thursday. Before the summer, only one person with monkey pox had been hospitalized.
“It is now slowly trickling in,” said a spokesman for the RIVM. The patients were admitted because of skin problems, genital problems and pain, among other things. Several patients have an underlying medical condition.
This is the total number of people who have been admitted with monkeypox. Most of them have since been released from the hospital. Deaths as a result of an infection with the monkeypox virus have not yet been registered in the Netherlands.
So far, 1,025 cases of monkey pox have been identified in the Netherlands. The percentage of people who end up in hospital as a result of an infection is therefore very small. More than half of the infections have been established in North Holland and Flevoland.
Risk groups can now be vaccinated against monkey pox at the GGDs. According to the RIVM, 5,441 vaccinations have been administered up to and including 10 August, 1,970 of which by GGD Amsterdam.
