Streaming service Disney+ has managed to gain 14.4 million new subscribers in the past quarter. The increase of new viewers was therefore higher than experts had foreseen. According to Walt Disney, the entertainment group behind the popular service, among other things, the customer base has now grown to 152.1 million subscribers worldwide. That is a third more than a year earlier.
Unlike many other streaming services, Disney+ manages to keep growing. Companies like Netflix have recently had to make do with fewer subscribers now that the corona pandemic is largely behind us and people have more alternatives because they are less confined to their homes. This raised the question of whether Disney+ was capable of expanding its customer base.
The customer growth at Disney+ was also reflected in Walt Disney’s financial results. The group’s turnover grew to 21.5 billion dollars (just under 21 billion euros), compared to 17 billion dollars (16.5 billion euros) in the same period a year earlier. The growth was partly due to the group’s amusement parks, which again attracted more visitors. This is also largely due to the fading effect of the corona pandemic.
Disney theme parks accounted for $7.4 billion (7.2 billion euros) in revenue in the past quarter, the third of Disney’s broken fiscal year. That was almost 75 percent more than a year earlier. The company emphasizes that its new Genie+ and Lightning Lane products have helped increase revenue. These new digital features were introduced to enhance the guest experience and allow park visitors to bypass the lines at key attractions.
CEO Bob Chapeck says in a statement that Disney has had an “excellent quarter”. He pointed out that in addition to the good performance of Disney+ and the theme parks, for example, there were also more viewers for live sports via Disney channels.
