Two national players score 20 goals
Admittedly, this thesis is a bit daring, but Lukas Nmecha fought back during the summer break after his operation and was in the starting XI in the cup. In the World Cup year, the 23-year-old will be even more motivated in order not to lose his place in Hansi Flick’s squad.
With his versatility and speed, he fits into Niko Kovac’s system, who also praised him in preparation. After eight goals last year, Nmecha will score more than twice as often in his second year in the Bundesliga.
Just like Serge Gnabry, by the way. FC Bayern is playing without a real “Nine” in the new season. Since the departure of Robert Lewandowski, coach Julian Nagelsmann has been planning a double attack from Gnabry and Sadio Mané. The Pole’s 35 goals will mostly be split between the two attacking players. After 14 goals last year, Gnabry will crack 20 this time.
A big traditional club goes down
After Arminia Bielefeld and Greuther Fürth were replaced by Werder Bremen and Schalke 04, the relegation battle is more exciting than it has been for a long time. The first candidate is VfL Bochum, which has the least financial opportunities and has also lost some regular players such as Elvis Rexhbecaj, Sebastian Polter and Maxim Leitsch. But who goes down next to Bochum?
FC Augsburg is not – at least it has always been like that in recent years. Shortly before the end of the season, the Fuggerstadt team pulled their heads out of the noose. But with a new system and a new coach, it could also be a difficult season for FCA. Experience has shown that a relegation tip from Augsburg is wrong, so that the second relegated team has to be another club.
And then we come to big traditional clubs like Schalke 04, Hertha BSC, VfB Stuttgart or Werder Bremen. They are all candidates for a (re)step into the second division. And it will probably hit one of them.
